Is it possible for Mandela’s former negotiator to mend the contentious relationship with Trump?

The President of South Africa has encountered significant challenges in the past, having served as the chief negotiator for Nelson Mandela’s African National Congress (ANC) during the negotiations to dismantle white-minority rule in the early 1990s. However, his upcoming meeting at the White House will demand all of his diplomatic skills. Cyril Ramaphosa aims to repair his country’s strained relationship with the United States, and his renowned negotiation abilities will be crucial as he seeks to persuade the leader of the free world. The administration of US President Donald Trump has been unusually reticent regarding this visit, with White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt refraining from offering any specifics or even confirming the event publicly. “The trade relations are of utmost importance – that is the reason for our visit,” Ramaphosa stated in Washington on Tuesday. “We aspire to leave the United States with a favorable trade agreement. Our goal is to enhance these relations and solidify the positive ties between our nations.” The two leaders have been in conflict for several months, with Trump persistently claiming that the Afrikaner community in South Africa is experiencing a “genocide” – a statement that has been echoed by his close advisor Elon Musk, the South African-born technology entrepreneur, despite being widely discredited.

Tensions escalated shortly after Trump commenced his second term in January, following President Ramaphosa’s enactment of a contentious legislation that permits the South African government to seize privately owned land without compensation under specific conditions, deemed “equitable and in the public interest.” This development further damaged the reputation of Africa’s largest economy in the view of the Trump administration, which was already incensed by South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
