High School Sweethearts Accused of Fiery Kidnapping Days Before Graduation

According to investigators, fire crews and police responded around 9:25 p.m. on May 24 to a vehicle fire outside the Tropic Bay Water Gardens business. After the blaze was extinguished, first responders made a horrifying discovery: the body of 59-year-old Joe Koza, tied up and with duct tape over his mouth. The smell of gasoline lingered in the air, and a melted fuel container was found nearby—clear indicators, police said, that the fire was set intentionally.

The investigation began to take shape after local news affiliates WTTG and WUSA reported that criminal complaints had been filed, outlining how law enforcement pieced the case together. Surveillance footage, witness statements, and physical evidence—including the distinctive stolen Bass Pro Shops hat—eventually pointed to the teen couple. The stolen hat was reportedly spotted on one of the suspects in video footage, placing them near the scene around the time of the incident.

Investigators believe Koza was alone in his store at around 5:30 p.m. that evening, just hours before his body was found. Authorities allege the teenage couple took advantage of the timing, confronted Koza, and forced him into his own vehicle. The motive remains under investigation, but police believe the attack may have stemmed from a personal dispute or desire for revenge.

Both suspects are now in custody and face a series of serious charges, including first-degree murder, arson, and kidnapping. With their high school graduation only days away, the arrests have shocked their classmates, teachers, and the broader community. Police continue to investigate whether others may have been involved or if additional crimes are connected to the case.
